The Warwick Shopping Centre in Perth, Western Australia, marked an important milestone in the development of AURE Glazing as the company’s first demonstration project. Completed in 2019, the installation provided an opportunity to test the performance, reliability and energy generation capabilities of AURE Glazing in a live commercial environment.

Delivered for Vicinity Centres, the project incorporated 18 triple-glazed, low-E photovoltaic insulating glass units (IGUs), covering approximately 24 m². The AURE Glazing was integrated into the Warwick Shopping Centre and connected to practical electrical loads throughout the site.

We’re excited to be trialling such innovative, leading-edge technology and embarking on a global first in solar energy application.

Augenium could transform the way we use glass in our centres, which reinvents the way we harvest renewable energy, reduces our exposure to the volatile energy market and our carbon footprint – a key focus for Vicinity.

We see great potential in trialling new technology such as AURE Glazing as we expand our solar program and innovation pipeline across our portfolio of shopping centres and as we explore mixed-use developments.

The generated electricity powers indoor lighting, outdoor signage and a shopping centre display screen. This demonstrates how solar glazing can contribute directly to the energy requirements of an operating commercial property. A public-facing dashboard inside the centre displays live generation data, allowing visitors to see the technology producing renewable energy in real time.

The project became the subject of technical research by Edith Cowan University, whose researchers analysed data gathered from the site. Their findings contributed to a peer-reviewed scientific paper published in Applied Sciences in 2019.

For Augenium, Warwick Shopping Centre established an important foundation for the commercial development of its AURE Glazing technology. Beyond demonstrating that photovoltaic glazing could operate reliably within a busy commercial environment, the project provided independently analysed performance data and a visible example of solar generation integrated directly into architecture.
